DELE A2 vs CCSE: which one for Spanish citizenship?
If you're applying for Spanish citizenship by residence, you've probably seen two acronyms: DELE A2 and CCSE. They're two different exams that measure different things. Here's which you need and why.
One-line summary
The DELE A2 tests your Spanish. The CCSE tests your knowledge of Spain's constitution, society and culture.
Who needs both?
Most people applying for Spanish citizenship by residence who are not from a Spanish-speaking country. In that case you submit:
- DELE A2 (or higher) — to prove you speak Spanish at the legally required level.
- CCSE — to prove you know basic facts about Spain's society and constitution.
Who is exempt from the DELE A2?
You're exempt from the DELE A2 (but still need the CCSE) if you are:
- A national of a Spanish-speaking country: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela.
- Someone who completed official schooling in Spanish (ESO, Bachillerato, university in Spain, etc.).
- Already a holder of a DELE B1 or higher.

Which order?
No required order. Practical advice:
- CCSE first — shorter and has a very high pass rate. It's an easy early win.
- DELE A2 next, giving yourself 2–3 months of preparation between the two.
What if I fail one?
You can retake it at the next session. Your citizenship application doesn't close; you simply wait until you have both certificates before uploading them.
